With only eight minutes left in the game and Trinity down 13-0 to the Pine Hills Wildcats, it seemed that the Saints picked the wrong team to host for homecoming.
But a 21-point rally gave the Saints an unbelievable 21-13 victory Friday.
&uot;We’re a big-play team,&uot; Trinity coach David King said. &uot;You can’t leave the stands early with us.&uot;
With 8:11 remaining on the clock, the Saints started a drive from their own 5-yard-line. Quarterback Chad Ridley hit receiver Wes Middleton for an 11-yard gain, and running back Walt Ketchings added 12 on a run.
On the next play, Ridley dropped back and hurled a bomb down the left sideline. The defender tripped, and Cole Brown made the catch for a 72-yard score.
The extra point began as a kick, but a bad snap forced kicker Scott Adams to put the ball up for grabs.
Saints linebacker Kellen Jex miraculously came down with the ball in the endzone, making the score 13-8 with 6:57 to go.
The Saints defense forced Pine Hills to punt after only three plays, and a poor kick gave Trinity the ball on the Wildcats 42-yard-line with 5:28 left in the game.
Two Ridley runs got the Saints to the 29. The teams then traded penalties, eventually giving Trinity a first-and-10 from the Wildcats 25. Ridley found Middleton on the next play for a 25-yard touchdown and a 14-13 lead.
On the Wildcats ensuing possession, Pine Hills turned the ball over on downs after two incomplete passes and a sack. Ridley broke a tackle on a quarterback sneak and ran 47 yards for the touchdown on the Saints’ first play of the drive, icing Trinity’s victory.
Pine Hills scored first on a 15-yard pass from Jonathan Honea to Jeff Whittington in the first quarter. Honea added a 22-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, literally dragging defenders with him into the endzone.
Penalties hurt the Saints early, as several drives went deep into Wildcats territory before mistakes forced Trinity back.
The district win gives the Saints a 3-2 overall, 1-1 district record, while the Wildcats fall to 1-4, 0-1.
