Sunshine, comfortable temperatures and low humidity greeted golfers at the Sixth Annual Miss-Lou United Way Four-Man Scramble Fund-Raiser Saturday at the Duncan Park Golf Course.

For the first time in several months, the participants did not have to endure near-record temperatures and dangerous heat indices.

&uot;It was a beautiful day for golf today,&uot; said Greg Brooking.

The team of Mike Hurley, Mickey Ellis, Ken Walker and Tommy Harrelson, who played in the afternoon, had a 17-under-par 54 to take a two-shot victory.

&uot;I was impressed with the layout (of the course),&uot; Hurley said. &uot;We played very well.

&uot;It was a team effort.&uot;

Proceeds from the event will benefit the United Way of the Greater Miss-Lou, which in turn helps fund 25 service and relief agencies in the Miss-Lou area.

The team of Brooking, Forrest Persons, Frances Trosclair and Larry Holmes, who played in the morning, had a round of 56 to finish in second place.

&uot;Frances, Forrest and Larry played the best I’ve ever seen them play,&uot; Brooking said. &uot;Frances’ putting was outstanding. Any time you have two eagles (no. 5, no. 10) in one round, you’re going to have a good round.

&uot;Larry drove to within three feet on no. 13, which is a hard par-3 hole, and we made birdie on that hole. On 12, we missed a 12-footer for eagle and had to settle for a birdie.&uot;

The team of Jimmy Hibbs, Mike Smith, Eddie Feemster and Mike Kern had a score of 57 to finish in third place.

The team of Tee Cotton, Doug Johnson, Scott Ford and Trey Isbell had a fired a 58 to finish in fourth place.

Eight teams carded a 59, including the team of Bill McKenzie, Irvin Anderson, Bobby Collins and Walter Hammack.

&uot;It was definitely a team effort,&uot; McKenzie said. &uot;Everybody had the right shot at the right time. The weather was perfect.

Seven teams finished with a round of 60.

The worst score of the tournament was a four-over-par 75 by the team Jerry Roberts, Carl Fuqua, Chuck Fuqua and Shelby Ensminger.
