Competitive matches and cool weather made for a good day of tennis at the 23rd Annual Cathedral Fall Festival Tennis Tournament Sunday at Duncan Park.

The event raises money for Cathedral School, said tournament chairman Lisa Jordan.

&uot;We had 105 players in the tournament, which is the highest number we’ve ever had,&uot; she said.

Jordan said the level of competition and the number of players made Saturday’s and Sunday’s action go on for several hours longer than expected.

In the Women’s 3.5-4.0 Round Robin Division, Augusta Smith and Karen Blain defeated Weasie Mallory and Kate Ferguson 7-5, 6-3 to win their third match of the weekend and their division.

&uot;We had good points. We had a close first set,&uot; Smith said. &uot;We were all playing well. We had good, hard points.&uot;

&uot;It was a lot of fun,&uot; Blain said. &uot;Mallory and Ferguson gave us a good, tough match. They played well.&uot;

Mallory and Ferguson, however, only won one match in the division to finish as the consolation winners.

Peggy Mayberry and Sally Jones won two matches to finish in second place.

Emily Eidt and Brenda Johnson won the Women’s Doubles 3.0 Division with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marla Beard and Katie Ray.

&uot;The tournament was well-organized,&uot; Johnson said. &uot;It was a pretty tough match. Most games went to deuce. It could’ve gone either way.&uot;

Karen Erwin and Jo Donnell became the consolation winners in the division by defeating Stephanie Butts and Linda Cardneaux, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Susan Blackburn and Alison Cupit won the Women’s 2.5 Division by defeating Lisa Moise and Nancy McLemore, 6-2, 6-2.

&uot;We’ve been playing together for about a year now and it’s nice to have a victory,&uot; Cupit said.

In the Men’s Doubles 4.5 Round Robin Division, Richard White and Frankie Spence defeated Adam Cardneaux and Derrick Pyron, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0) in the championship match to win their third match and the division.

Both teams won two matches to force the deciding match.

&uot;We did pretty good,&uot; White said. &uot;The first set we were hitting winners. In the second set they (Cardneaux and Pyron) turned it up and in the tiebraker we turned it on.&uot;

&uot;The tournament was real competitive and lots of fun,&uot; Spence said. &uot;The first set we played pretty strong and as the match went on they played better.&uot;

Joey Havens and Raymond Hudson won one match to become the consolation winners.

In the Men’s Doubles 3.5-4.0 Division, Pat Caldwell and Bobby Holder defeated Michael Blain and Michael Tims, 6-0, 6-1.

&uot;I think we played real hard,&uot; Caldwell said. &uot;We had a lot of fun and that’s what the Fall Festival is all about.&uot;

Kevin Flowers and Danny Huffines were the consolation winners as they defeated Mike Pevey and Milton Whittington, 6-0, 6-1.

In the Men’s Doubles 3.0 Round Robin Division, Jason Hicks and Chris White defeated Scott Fleming and Rocky Kettering, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
