NATCHEZ — Jay James didn’t mince words when giving his thoughts on his Tensas Academy girls’ 5-1 loss to Trinity Episcopal Monday night.

“That was the worst ball game we played this year by far,” the Lady Chiefs’ head softball coach said.

Five errors in the field and no offense to speak of was a losing combination for the Lady Chiefs, and James said he expects better out of his players.

“We’ve been competitive in every game we’ve played except the two against (Adams County Christian School), when we were shorthanded,” James said.

“We’re a young team, but I was very disappointed in them. I feel like we’re a much better team than what we showed tonight.”

Trinity rode strong pitching by starter Kailey Hutchins, who went six innings and gave up one run on two hits with three strikeouts. Lady Saints head coach Chris Hutchins said his defense stepped up to help his daughter.

“(Kailey) is a young pitcher, and she has her ups and downs,” Chris said. “She finished well today. The defense played well, and that’s important, because she’s not going to strike a lot of people out.”

Taylor Olds scored Tensas Academy’s only run in the top of the first on a fielding error by Lady Saints second baseman Carly Trisler.

Trinity responded in the bottom of the first inning when Marty Lewis came home on a fielder’s choice and Kailey scored on a single by Randa Morace.

The Lady Saints added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Amelia Conn scored on a fielder’s choice, and Kailey drove in another run on an RBI single. Tali Beard came home on a passed ball, making it 5-1.

Bailey Keyes took the loss for Tensas Academy.

Despite the win, Chris said he didn’t like how his offense went into a lull in the later innings.

“We went two up, two down, two innings in a row when we had a chance to put them away,” Chris said.

Trinity (2-6, 0-2) will host Brookhaven Academy today. Tensas Academy will play at Tallulah Academy today.
