Green Wave drowns St. Andrews twice

The Cathedral Lady Green Wave won a pair of key District 6-2A games against the St. Andrews Lady Saints Thursday night at the Natchez Girls Softball Complex.

In the first game, Cathedral pounded out an incredible 26 hits and Amber Green pitched a five-hitter in a 23-2 win that was called after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

After allowing two runs and three hits in the first inning, Green allowed just two hits the rest of the way, both in the fourth inning.

&uot;I pitched good,&uot; Green said. &uot;I struggled but I came through.&uot;

After being held to no runs and two hits in the first two innings by St. Andrews pitcher Anna Marsh, Cathedral scored six runs in the third inning, four in the fourth and 13 in the sixth inning.

Mary Margaret Allwood, Jessica Barrett, Tori Blackwell and Krystal Groom each went 4-for-5 in game one, and Leighton McDaniel went 3-for-5 with six runs batted in.

In the second game, Allwood hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Cathedral a come-from-behind 14-13 win.

&uot;I was nervous,&uot; Allwood said. &uot;I told coach Ogden to take me out of the game and she wouldn’t. I came through when they needed me to. The whole team played well and stayed focused.&uot;

Green struggled to start the second game, giving up four runs and walking six in one-plus inning before being pulled for Alaina Bedson.

&uot;I was glad I was pulled in the second game because I was tired,&uot; Green said.

&uot;Amber pitched real well the first game but struggled in the second game, so I made the change,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Lynn Ogden. &uot;I’m kinda stunned because we came back.&uot;

Bedson, who was the winning pitcher in game two, allowed nine runs and six hits while striking out one and walking four in six innings.

St. Andrews (10-15, 1-4) was well on its way to winning the second game when Lauren Cohen hit a grand slam, inside-the-park home run in the top of the fifth inning for a 13-4 lead.

Cathedral (8-3, 4-3) then came back with three runs in the sixth inning and seven in the seventh.

&uot;We got some hits from players who needed to hit the ball,&uot; coach Ogden said. &uot;Laura Huffines hit the ball real well.

Groom went 3-for-4 with a home run and a triple and had three RBI. Kate Reid went 4-for-4, Huffines was 3-for-3 with two RIB and Emily Stevens went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
