The second annual Trinity Invitational Cross Country Meet will take place Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. at the Trinity track course.

With this being an invitational meet, it is not an MPSA-sanctioned track event, Trinity cross country coach Earl Hefley said.

&uot;I decided to do this for fun,&uot; Hefley said. &uot;I could invite anyone. It went fairly well last year, so we figured we’d try it again this year.&uot;

Hefley has invited Huntington School, Adams County Christian School, Wilkinson County Christian Academy, Cathedral High, Mount Olive, East Rankin, Tri-County (located in Flora in Rankin County) and Woodland Baptist.

&uot;It’s good for our area teams because students and parents don’t have to travel as far,&uot; Hefley said.

So far, however, only Huntington and ACCS have accepted.

&uot;I hope WCCA and Cathedral accept, but it looks like it will be Trinity, ACCS and Huntington,&uot; Hefley said. &uot;We hope to have some good participation.&uot;

Unfortunately, WCCA will not be sending anyone to the meet. Head football and track coach Warren Whitaker said the cross country season interferes with softball and football seasons, and the students are too busy to attend.

Hefley said Mount Olive, East Rankin, Tri-County and Woodland Baptist will probably not participate in the meet because of the distance the teams would be forced to travel.

A lack of participation won’t be because of a lack of compensation. The top three finishers of both the boys and girls groups in the meet will receive trophies.

&uot;That’s a lot of trophies for a small meet,&uot; Hefley said. &uot;It’s something I like to do, though.&uot;

The meet will start and finish on the track, and wind its way through Trinity’s grounds. The boys will run for 3.1 miles and the girls will run for 2 miles, both regulation MPSA distances.
