NATCHEZ — Jefferson County High School’s depth was as deep as an ocean against the much smaller Trinity Episcopal Day School team Friday evening.

And that proved a big difference in the game, as the Tigers opened up their season with a win on the road against the Saints 47-0. Jefferson County tallied 134 yards on the ground and 193 yards in the air and proved to be too much for the Saints to handle.

“Our guys came out and played a pretty good game,” Jefferson County head coach James Herrington said. “My hats off to Trinity, they played an outstanding game, we just played a little bit better this week.”

Trinity head coach Josh Loy said the main problem was the array of mental errors that plagued the Saints at key times throughout the game. The depth also hurt, as Trinity fielded just 20 players.

“We ended the game with 18,” Loy said. “They wore us down. I don’t think it was so much the depth as it was the mental mistakes at times when we had the chance to keep the game respectable. It’s stuff we have to clean up and correct quickly.”

Jefferson County’s Rashaad Bradley scored the first touchdown on a 2-yard run with 5:25 left in the first quarter. De’Anthony Blake caught a 5-yard pass from Dominique Hammitte with 9:59 left in the second to make it 14-0.

Christopher Tyler scored for the Tigers with 7:42 left in the second on an 8-yard run, and O’lajoawon O’Neal had a 40-yard run with 3:38 left to give the Tigers a 27-0 lead at the half.

Yauncy Stampley ran a blocked punt 12 yards into the end zone with 10:30 left in the third quarter, and Cody Gilchrist tallied a 24-yard touchdown run at the 2:12 mark in the third.

The Tigers scored one more touchdown in the fourth on a 38-yard pass from Bradley to DeShawn Patten with 7:10 left in the game.

Herrington said he was pleased with the balance on offense, and it’s something he’s strived for ever since taking over the Tigers’ program.

“It kind of keeps us unpredictable for the defense,” Herrington said. “Guys made plays, the line blocked well, and that allowed us to do the things we wanted to do.”

Jefferson County (1-0) will play at Natchez High next Friday, while Trinity (0-1) hosts Centreville Academy.
