BAKER, La. – The Adams County Christian School Rebels qualified for the playoffs Friday with a 12-0 road win over Central Private.
After starting the season 0-5, the Rebels’ accomplishment is amazing, said head coach Bo Swilley.
&uot;My son asked me after our second district loss what it would take for us to make the playoffs,&uot; Swilley said. &uot;I said it would take an act of God.
&uot;God did His part,&uot; he said. &uot;Tonight we did ours.&uot;
Both Rebel scores came in the second quarter, and both were courtesy of junior quarterback Ty Smith, who finished the game 15-of-23 passing for 247 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Smith first hit Trey Mardis for a 47-yard TD strike, and later connected with Lee Watts for a 12-yard score.
Jason Rollins led Rebel rushers with 107 yards, and Russ Marks contributed two interceptions on defense.
&uot;Our defense stepped up tonight. They played really well,&uot; Swilley said.
&uot;They got us a shut-out. We got all we needed in the second quarter.&uot;
ACCS is now on a two-game winning streak, something that was nearly unthinkable after the season’s disastrous start,&160;Swilley said.
&uot;We’re playing better. We have more confidence,&uot; Swilley said. &uot;Also, we’re injury-free for the first time this year. When you only have 27 kids, injuries can hurt you.&uot;
ACCS faces Riverfield next week and will likely face Manchester in the first round of the playoffs, Swilley said.
The Rebels were helped to a playoff spot because district rival Silliman has been found by the MPSA to have an ineligible player on the roster, causing Silliman to forfeit all district games, Swilley said.
