LORMAN – Junior quarterback Terrance Levy threw three touchdown passes to lead the Southern Jaguars to a 30-14 win over the Alcorn State Braves Saturday at Jack Spinks Stadium.

The win improved the Jaguars’ record to 3-4 overall and 2-3 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and, more importantly, kept alive their chance of going the SWAC Championship Game.

&uot;Overall, we’re making progress,&uot; said Southern head coach Pete Richardson. &uot;We’ve had a brutal first seven games.&uot;

Alcorn remained winless on the season at 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the SWAC.

&uot;Just like every other game, we had too many turnovers,&uot; said Braves head coach Johnny Thomas.

Alcorn’s final home game of the regular season got off to a good start as the Braves drove 91 yards on 16 plays, ending with Quentin Raston’s 1-yard touchdown run with 3:59 remaining in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

The Braves made two fourth-and-one conversions to keep the drive alive.

However, that would be the last time the Braves scored until late in the game, as Southern took the momentum in the second quarter.

&uot;We made some adjustments on defense,&uot; Richardson said. &uot;We got a couple of turnovers which got the offense going.&uot;

Jacca Williams’s recovery of an Alcorn fumble led to Southern’s first score of the game, a 14-yard pass from Levy to wide receiver Michael Hayes. The extra point was blocked and the Jaguars trailed by one.

That wouldn’t last long, though, as Levy ended a five-play, 52-yard drive with a 15-yard TD pass to Devin Lewis. Levy threw to Haywood Gallien for the two-point conversion.

&uot;Levy made some plays for us, which is what we needed,&uot; Richardson said.

Levy wasn’t through yet as he then threw a 13-yard TD pass to Al’Trevion Joubert to give the Jaguars a 21-7 halftime lead.

Levy was 18-of-31 for 262 yards with two interceptions.

Joubert caught nine passes for 107 yards. Hayes had five receptions for 86 yards.

&uot;A team like Southern with a quality offense scored as a result of our turnovers,&uot; Thomas said. &uot;We were moving the ball pretty good until the momentum shift.&uot;

Southern got a 5-yard TD run from Elvis Joseph and a 28-yard field goal from Justin Mattingly for a 31-7 lead with 6:05 to play.

Alcorn scored with late in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard pass from Damion Ford to Marcus Holbert.

Ford completed 20-of-42 passes for 169 yards with two interceptions and Holbert caught six passes for 67 yards.

Ken Washington of Natchez led Alcorn’s defense with 16 tackles and Tyrone Parsons had two interceptions.

Alcorn has an open date next Saturday and plays at Mississippi Valley State at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4.
