Hughes, Zerby lead Brookwater to championship

Chris Hughes and Byron Zerby accounted for all of Brookwater Energy’s goals in a 3-0 win over Britton & Koontz in the championship game of the Under 18 Youth Soccer League 2000 Natchez Cup Tournament at Morgantown School.
Hughes scored two goals, one a header with an assist from Blase Gaude in the first quarter and the other in the fourth quarter after both teams were unable to score in the second and third quarters.
&uot;They were fun,&uot; Hughes said about the two goals.
Zerby’s goal also came in the first quarter to give Brookwater Energy a 1-0 lead.
Marcus Archer made several outstanding and several easy saves to keep the shutout intact.
&uot;Great goalkeepers do help,&uot; said Brookwater Energy coach Jeff Kirkwood.
&uot;These guys came out as rookies,&uot; Kirkwood continued. &uot;They never gave up. They were so far behind and ended up winning the championship.&uot;
In the third-place game, Sports Center defeated Concordia Bank & Trust Company 10-1.
Despite that loss, Concordia Bank won the league championship.
