JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi as expected went for Republican George Bush and four incumbent members of Congress in an election heavy with voters and light on surprises.
Among the early winners in Tuesday’s general election was Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott. The only unsettled congressional race an hour after the polls closed was in the 4th District.
Lott won his third term against a former college administrator who said the state needed a black U.S. senator to promote racial healing. Troy Brown said Lott’s 28-year record in Washington was hard to overcome.
Also winning were Reps. Roger Wicker and Chip Pickering, both Republicans, and Gene Taylor and Bennie Thompson, both Democrats.
”There’s a positive feeling about incumbents because the economy is good, we’re at peace, we’ve balanced the budget, and we’ve had welfare reform,” Lott said during his victory party at a Jackson hotel.
