FERRIDAY, La. – Jason Scott led all scorers with 36 points as the Ferriday Trojans won their season-opener over Newellton 64-50 Tuesday night at the Ferriday High gym.
Although the Trojans came away with the win, head coach James Davis didn’t like the way his team played in the first half.
&uot;We started out sluggish,&uot; he said. &uot;In the first half we tried to get it into the paint and we couldn’t do it. In the second half we were able to get it into the paint and Jason capitalized on it.&uot;
Scott was the only Ferriday player to score in double figures.
Dejuan Banks had nine points and Jackie Thomas added eight points.
&uot;Defense and rebounding we didn’t play well,&uot; Davis said. &uot;We’ve got to improve in those two areas.&uot;
Chris Snowden led Newellton with 12 points. John Petty added 10 points. Nian Jordan and Darium Clark had nine points apiece.
In the varsity girls game, the Lady Trojans won their season-opener over Newellton 54-40.
Monique Jones led the way for the Lady Trojans with 21 points, enough to make her the game’s leading scorer.
&uot;We played excellent defense tonight,&uot; said Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron. &uot;We pressed from the very beginning and that helped us. They wanted to play up-tempo against us.&uot;
Rashonda Leonard and Latasha Cain had 10 points each for Ferriday.
&uot;The offense looked great,&uot; Abron said. &uot;We had some open looks and a lot of easy shots.&uot;
Kim Brown led Newellton with 16 points and Amanda Gales added eight points.
Ferriday plays at Davidson at 5 p.m. next Tuesday.
