The St. Joseph (Jackson) Bruins scored four goals in a seven-minute span in the first half and cruised to a 13-2 win over Cathedral Tuesday night in the Green Wave’s home opener at D’Evereaux Field.
&uot;You hate to open up (at home) with St. Joe, which has a lot of talent,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Rocky Kettering. &uot;But we wanted to play against the best to see how good of a team we can be.&uot;
Matt Nicosia led St. Joseph’s scoring onslaught with five goals and two assists and teammates David Yokum and Louis Jones scored two goals apiece.
The game was scoreless until Yokum scored his first goal with 26:38 left in the first half and scored again less than two minutes later.
&uot;I was glad I scored,&uot; Yokum said. &uot;I got a lot of help from my teammates. These were my first two goals of the season.
&uot;I think our team showed a lot of prominence.&uot;
One minute later, Nicosia scored his first goal of the game for a 3-0 lead and John Spencer scored with an assist from Nicosia with 19:34 remaining in the half.
&uot;I think coming from last year we expected to be good,&uot; Nicosia said. &uot;They gave us a really good game. We didn’t get any cheap goals. We had to work for them.&uot;
Nicosia scored three more times in the first half as St. Joseph (1-1) took a 7-0 halftime lead and didn’t let up in the second half.
The Bruins scored five goals a 9 1/2-minute span in the half, led by Jones’s two goals and Nicosia’s fifth goal of the game.
Nathan Trifone (with an assist from Nicosia) and Curtis Caskey each had a goal during the 5-0 run.
Cathedral (1-1) finally scored on a goal by Wyler Murray with 15:35 left and got a goal from Palmer Rhinehart with 14:10 remaining in the game.
