Last week was about rules, textbooks and new lockers for many young people in the Miss-Lou as a new year of school kicked off at most area schools.

A brand new school opened its doors in Concordia Parish. The Concordia Parish Academy of Math, Science and Technology is something the whole community should be excited to watch. As a magnet school for high-performing students, it’s an educational model worth some attention. The students were certainly excited to get started, if only because it meant playing with iPads.

But while students got back to the books, the rest of the Miss-Lou made some good news, too. Let’s review a few other good headlines.

• The newest of Mississippi Riverboats — the Queen of the Mississippi — docked in Natchez for the first time. The 150-passenger boat has several more stops planned this year. It’s great to see this form of tourism coming back.

• Durham School Services, the school bus company contracted to run buses in the area, has worked this summer to re-arrange bus routes to the Natchez public schools. The end result, the company says, should be shorter ride times for students and cost savings for the district. That’s a win-win, for us all.

As the first full week of school begins for many students and the last full week of summer vacation wraps up for others, we know the coming week will be great.
