Since hunting season officially got under way last week, the Miss-Lou area has been hit with one rainstorm after another, most of which have dumped several inches of precipitation.

Some area hunters said they don’t mind hunting in the rain and cold, though a few others said it has had a major effect on their sport.

Jimmy Sandel of Natchez, who hunts both deer and duck, said the rain hasn’t bothered him a bit.

&uot;I killed a nice five-point buck at Cypress Grove Hunting Club down in Rodney last Sunday,&uot; he said. &uot;I also killed some wood ducks in Tensas Parish.&uot;

He said that the deer do not move much during a rain, but when the rain stops, they get to stepping.

Although the rain and cold can be uncomfortable, Sandel said a slicker suit and plenty of clothes can make a hunt right as, well, rain.

Another hunter who hasn’t let the rain bother him is Frank Mason of Ferriday, La., who is a deer hunter.

&uot;I live on low ground,&uot; he said. &uot;It hasn’t affected us. I killed a nine-point last Tuesday.&uot;

This is the weather area hunters should have expected, Mason said, as this is the first time the weather has been normal for the start of the season.

&uot;The last two years it’s been very dry,&uot; he said.

Trey Mason, Frank Mason’s son, is primarily a duck hunter. He said all the rain has not really had an effect on area duck hunting. &uot;I’ve killed a bunch of wood ducks so far,&uot; he said.

Stephanie Seale of Natchez, a deer hunter, begs to differ.

&uot;The weather has (had an effect) for me because you can’t get out and hunt&uot; in the rain, she said. &uot;I have not had any luck so far this year.&uot;
