The Cathedral boys and girls soccer teams split their district home games against the North Pike Jaguars Thursday, with the boys defeating the Jaguars 6-2 and the girls losing to the Lady Jags 2-0 at D’Evereaux Field.

The boys team kicked things off early with a goal by John Erick Myers, assisted by Johnathan Elliot. With seven minutes remaining in the first half, Myers repeated his earlier effort, again with the assist by Elliot.

North Pike (4-3, 1-2) answered with a breakaway goal by Kerry King with two minutes remaining in the half.

The Green Wave (3-4, 2-1) started off the second half with a goal by John Paul Kenda. Byron Zerby, with the assist by Myers, then scored for Cathedral 20 minutes into the second half.

The Jaguars’ James Harrod scored North Pike’s final goal on a penalty kick after being pushed by Green Wave keeper Brent Tosspon. Minutes later, Cathedral’s Rodney Daggett kicked a loose ball over the head of Jaguar goalie Jacob Andrews.

With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Patrick Biglane scored after a push from inside the penalty box led to a direct kick, padding the Green Wave’s score.

&uot;The boys did a great job in realizing the importance of this game,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Rocky Kettering. &uot;It was our defense that allowed us to win the game. The defense allowed us to get the shots into the net. Mark Steckler, Drew Flach, and Ben Tillman were all excellent on defense tonight.&uot;

Despite having a strong defensive stand in the first half, the Cathedral girls (0-5) were not as fortunate.

After a scoreless first half, Monica Mixon kicked in a goal for North Pike (6-2) less than 20 minutes into the second half. Mixon would repeat with her second goal of the night just ten minutes later, giving the Lady Jaguars the victory.

&uot;Joanna Stubbs and Becky Tillman played outstanding defense,&uot; Kettering said. &uot;It was a very frustrating game. The girls played really hard, but just couldn’t seem to get the shots into the net.&uot;

The Cathedral soccer teams will play Friday at Brookhaven, starting with the junior varsity team at 4:30 p.m., with the girls and boys varsity following.
