VIDALIA, La. – The Lady Vikings overcame a shaky first quarter for a come-from-behind 50-37 win over the Winnsboro High Lady Wildcats Tuesday night at the Vidalia High Gym.
Brendy Ellis and Natalie McGraw scored 22 points each to lead Vidalia. Ellis had nine rebounds and four steals. McGraw had seven rebounds, six steals and two three-pointers.
&uot;I got into foul trouble and I had to watch my movement,&uot; said McGraw, who picked up two fouls in the first quarter. &uot;Then I didn’t think about it and my shots started falling.&uot;
The only two other players to score for Vidalia were Wendy Paul with four and Ramona Washington with two.
After scoring only seven points in the first quater, Vidalia (11-4) outscored Winnsboro 13-6 in the second quarter to take a 20-19 lead at halftime.
&uot;They outrebounded us. We couldn’t play defense,&uot; said Lady Vikings head coach Lillian Johnson about the first half.
&uot;After playing as hard as we did last week and as many games as we played, we came out sluggish,&uot; Johnson said.
The Lady Vikings came out with a full-court press to get the Lady Wildcats (2-9) out of rhythm.
It worked, as Vidalia outscored Winnsboro 13-4 in the third quarter to take a ten-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
&uot;That (the press defense) was the key to our success,&uot; Johnson said. &uot;We made them turn the ball over. That helped us out offensively.&uot;
Marlena Baker, who led Winnsboro with 11 points, hit a three-pointer as time expired for the final score. Ericka Washington added eight points and eight rebounds.
Vidalia next plays today in the Block High School Invitational Tournament in Jonesville.
