VIDALIA, La. – The Vikings used a huge third quarter to turn back a fiesty Winnsboro High Wildcats team en route to an 80-56 win Tuesday.
Derrick Johnson led Vidalia with 22 points 16 rebounds.
&uot;I just wanted to play much better,&uot; Johnson said. &uot;The last few games I haven’t been doing good in rebounding, so I told coach (Robert Sanders) I can do better.&uot;
Winnsboro (5-6) jumped out to an early lead on Vidalia (11-4), as the Wildcats took a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Vidalia appeared as if it was on its way to blowing the game open in the second quarter, though, as the Vikings went on a 17-6 run to take a 30-20 lead.
Johnson, Kenny Warner and A.J. Warner each had solid first-half performances while Jarvis Vaughn, Vidalia’s leading scorer, was struggling.
&uot;Everybody had to step up because the rest of us knew they’d be keying on him,&uot; said Kenny Warner, who had 12 points, including two three-pointers. &uot;My shots were falling, so coach told me to keep shooting.&uot;
But with four minutes left until halftime, Vaughn went to the bench after picking up his third foul. He had only six first-half points.
Winnsboro took advantage of the situation and scored the last 10 points of the quarter to tie the score at 30 at halftime.
&uot;At halftime, he said to pick our heads up and play better team ball,&uot; Johnson said.
Playing better team ball on both ends of the court is what Vidalia did in the second half.
Vaughn didn’t let his first-half foul problems get the better of him as he scored 15 points in the second half to finish with 21 to go along with nine rebounds, eight steals and two blocked shots.
Vidalia outscored Winnsboro 26-11 in the third quarter and 24-15 in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
A.J. Warner had 14 points, including one three-pointer, for Vidalia.
