FERRIDAY, La. – Trinity tightened its chokehold on MPSA District 5-1A Tuesday by handing a pair of losses to Huntington, arguably the Saints’ toughest district foe.

In the boys varsity game, the Saints edged the Hounds 64-58, despite trailing by four points with under a minute to play.

A Randy Hinson lay-up gave the Hounds (8-10, 4-2) a 58-54 lead late in the fourth quarter, but Trinity’s Chad Ridley and Ryan Rachal soon tied the game with a pair of jump shots. A Greg Ketchings free throw then gave Trinity a one-point edge with 15 seconds to play.

Ridley iced the game by darting in front of Huntington’s in-bound pass and sinking a lay-up, forcing Huntington to foul in the closing seconds.

&uot;I knew I had four fouls, but coach said to give it my all and leave it all on the court,&uot; Ridley said. &uot;I just went for it.&uot;

Ridley led the Saints (13-3, 6-0) with 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Ketchings added 11 points.

Hinson led the Hounds with 14 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Jordan Owens had the game’s only double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Todd Iverstine added 13 points and Josh Johns had 10 rebounds, six points and two blocks.

In the girls varsity game, what was a possible roadblock on the Lady Saints’ drive to district dominance proved only a speed bump as Trinity walked to an easy 72-35 win.

&uot;That was the best we ever played,&uot; said Trinity’s Lauren Tanner, who dominated the paint to rack up 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.

The Lady Hounds (13-8, 5-1) missed several early shots and fell behind 30-9 at the half. The Lady Saints (18-3, 6-0) had no such trouble and scored 21 points in both the third and fourth quarters for the final score.

Vanessa Gordon led Trinity with a game-high 21 points. Becky Bass and Sara Greer each scored 11.

The Lady Hounds were led by Emily Hazlip’s 16 points. Sarah Ashmore chipped in 12.

District 5-1A action continues later this week for both teams. On Friday, Trinity travels to Pine Hills Academy and Huntington travels to Chamberlain-Hunt Academy. Both schools will play four games beginning at 4 p.m.
