Lady Green Wave earns year’s first win in soccer showdown

The Cathedral High boys and girls soccer teams swept Natchez High Tuesday at D’Evereaux Field. The Lady Green Wave won 5-2 over the Lady Bulldogs, and the Cathedral boys defeated Natchez by a score of 6-3.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the only goal of the first half when Tammy Fleming kicked the ball in with about 20 minutes remaining in the half.
The first 10 minutes of the second half brought two scores from Cathedral. Mary Margaret Steckler scored with an assist from Jessica Matthews. Minutes later, Kara Simonton got one past the goalie to put the Lady Green Wave (1-6) in the lead. Becky Tillman scored with 25 minutes and change remaining, followed by two more goals by Simonton.
Natchez’ Mallorie Dixon kicked in the Lady Bulldogs’ (4-4) final goal with an assist by Felicia Mo.
&uot;We played a good first half,&uot; said Natchez coach Dana Benson. &uot;We were just out hustled. Cathedral played a good game.&uot;
&uot;The girls are happy to get their first win,&uot; said Cathedral coach Rocky Kettering.
The Cathedral boys got off to a quick start against the Bulldogs (3-6). Byron Zerbe scored a goal in the first 5 minutes of the game to give the Green Wave (4-5, 2-1) the early lead.
Cathedral’s John Erick Myers scored mid-way through the half when he kicked the ball right under the hands of the Natchez goalie. Myers scored again with an assist by Bennett Jeansonne.
Zerbe scored his second goal of the night with just a few minutes remaining in the first half.
With a few seconds remaining, Chris Hughes scored the first goal of the night for the Bulldogs on a penalty kick after being tripped in the box.
Myers scored his third goal of the night early in the second half, followed by another goal by Zerbe. Natchez’s Michael Pace scored a goal with about 18 minutes remaining in the half. The Bulldogs’ final score of the night came from a high kick just over the hands of the goalie by Lamar O’Neal.
&uot;Ben Tillman and Jeff Chandler played tremendous defense,&uot; Kettering said. &uot;This allowed the whole team to play well.&uot;
Natchez High boys only play Thursday night at 5:30 at home against Vicksburg. The Cathedral teams also play Thursday in district play against Franklin County at 5:30 at D’Evereaux field.
