Natchez High’s and Cathedral High’s varsity boys and girls soccer teams will face each other for the second time in a week and the third time this season tonight at Natchez High Stadium.
The varsity girls game starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity boys game at 7 p.m., weather permitting.
Last Tuesday at D’Evereaux Field, Cathedral swept Natchez with the Lady Green Wave picking up their first win of the season with a 5-2 win over the Lady Bulldogs and the Green Wave defeating the Bulldogs 6-3.
On Nov. 9, Natchez’s girls team stunned Cathedral 3-1 for its first win of the season while Cathedral’s boys team shutout Natchez 5-0.
Natchez boys coach Peter Rinaldi said he would like to finally get a win over Cathedral.
&uot;It was my suggestion that we play four games,&uot; he said.
Last Tuesday, Rinaldi had to use some of his varsity players in the junior varsity game.
&uot;I had a number of JV kids who were ill, injured or had bad grades,&uot; he said.
Because of those circumstance some of the varsity players were worn down during the first half of the varsity game, Rinald said.
&uot;Tomorrow, the test of the game will be who wants to win and who will establish control of the midfield in the first 10 minutes of the game,&uot; he said.
Rinaldi said he will start five midfielders in an effort to slow down Cathedral’s Byron Zerby, who scored three goals against Natchez a week ago, and John Erick Myers, the team’s leading scorer.
Rinaldi said there are several advantages of playing a team in the same town.
&uot;There’s no bus ride. Parents and kids get home early. It’s very easy for the kids and parents to go back and forth between the two schools.
&uot;It’s a rivalry, but it’s a friendly rivalry. There’s no ill will between Natchez and Cathedral,&uot; he continued. &uot;The kids know each other. It’s fun having four in-town games.&uot;
&uot;(Cathedral coach Rocky) Kettering said if we beat them tomorrow, he would make me some brownies because it’s my favorite dessert,&uot; Rinaldi laughed.
