It was a victorious night for the Huntington Hounds as both the girls and boys varsity teams posted MPSA District 5-1A wins against Amite School Center Tuesday night at the Huntington gym. The Lady Hounds defeated the Lady Rebels 46-28, and the Huntington boys won 42-31.
The Lady Hounds (15-8, 7-1) gained an early lead in the first quarter, going up 10-0 before Amite (7-11, 4-4) scored their first point from the foul line. The Huntington girls never lost their first quarter lead.
&uot;We are always glad to get the win, but we were inconsistent,&uot; said Huntington coach Penny Moak. &uot;We had a 28 percent shooting percentage. We have to do better to make it in post-season play.&uot;
Despite the low shooting percentage, the Lady Hounds managed to out-shoot the Lady Rebels from the free throw line, making 10-of-18 shots while ASC made only 5-of-15.
Emily Hazlip led Huntington with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Amite’s leader was Kayla Baker, who notched 11 points and nine rebounds.
The ASC boys took the early lead in the first quarter of their game, but Huntington kept it close. The Hounds (9-11, 5-3) were able to tie the game at the half and with five and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter, pulled ahead of the Rebels (4-13, 3-5). The Hounds kept the lead through the end of the game.
&uot;This was a must-win game for us tonight,&uot; said Huntington coach Paul Glynn. &uot;We have a very tight division, with one game separating several of us. I laid out the challenge to win tonight, and they responded.&uot;
Wyatt Kemp lead the Hounds in scoring with nine points, and Josh Johns lead the team with 10 rebounds. Mitch Newman of the Rebels led his team with nine points.
In junior varsity play, the Huntington boys and girls both defeated the Amite teams. The Lady Hounds won 58-13 against the Lady Rebels, thanks to Erin Hedrick’s game-high 16 points. The Huntington boys beat Amite 61-41, led by Douglas Miller’s 22 points.
The Huntington teams next host against Ben’s Ford Christian School Friday for four games beginning at 4 p.m.
