An Adams County man was listed in good condition Thursday afternoon after a Wednesday bus accident which killed another man. Roosevelt Logan, 70, 109 Wisteria&160;St., was being treated at University Medical Center in Jackson Thursday. The pickup truck in which he was a passenger collided with a Natchez-Adams school bus on Martin Luther King Jr. Road.
The driver of the truck, Eddie Gaines, 57, 6 Old Johnson Road, died Wednesday at the Jackson hospital.
Sgt. John Stoll of the Mississippi Highway Patrol said the accident took place at about 8:08 a.m. as the driver of another truck, Robert Smith, was making a left turn at his residence.
Bus driver Ernest Wayne Strickland attempted to avoid hitting Smith’s truck directly in the rear by jerking the wheel into the path of Gaines and Logan, who were travelling in the opposite direction, Stoll said. Gaines and Logan were not wearing seatbelts, and Natchez firefighters had to remove the trapped victims from the truck, Stoll said.
No children were on the bus at the time of the accident, a relief to law enforcement.
&uot; The first thing I did was to start looking on the bus to see how many kids were on the floor,&uot; Stoll said.
Stoll said he is not certain whether speed was a factor in the accident. The highway patrol is still investigating the accident.
No charges have been filed against Strickland. He was suspended from work until the investigation is complete, Superintendent Dr. Carl Davis said Wednesday.
