Natchez and Cathedral’s varsity soccer teams split a doubleheader Saturday at D’Evereaux Field in the last meeting between the two schools this season.
In the varsity girls game, Natchez scored three goals in a 4:55 minute span late in the first half en route to a 4-0 win.
&uot;We looked at this game as do or die for us,&uot; said Lady Bulldogs coach Dana Benson. &uot;We had to win this game to possibly have a winning season.&uot;
Felicia Mo scored Natchez’s first goal with 27:48 to go in the first half.
But with 5:45 to go in the half, Renee Davis’s goal started the scoring flurry. A minute later, Tammy Fleming scored, and with one minute left, Amber Blake scored.
Cathedral (1-9) had only three shots on goal for the entire game compared to 20 for Natchez (6-6).
In the varsity boys game, Drew Flach’s goal nearly midway through the second half broke a 1-1 tie and the Green Wave came away with a 3-1 win.
Cathedral (7-5) scored first at the 31:53 mark of the first half on the first of two goals by Mark Steckler.
With less than a minute left until halftime, Natchez’s lone goal came when the ball bounced off Natchez’s Paige Bonds and then off several other players before ricocheting into the goal. Bonds was given credit for the goal.
Natchez goalie Carl Hayes made several saves to keep the Bulldogs (3-10) in the game.
&uot;Natchez High came here ready to play,&uot; Kettering said. &uot;They’re going to have a great team next year.&uot;
After Flach’s tie-breaking goal, Steckler made his second goal of the game with 7:01 remaining in the game.
