NATCHEZ — Centreville Academy’s Ariana Bigner was dominant for the Lady Tigers in the pitching circle Tuesday night.

Bigner threw six innings of one-hit ball to shut down Trinity Episcopal 12-0 at the Natchez High School softball fields.

“For her first outing, it was pretty good,” Centreville head coach Mark Mann said. “She’s been our starting pitcher for four years, and she’s dependable.”

Bigner received plenty of help from her offense as well. The Lady Tigers collected 13 hits to score their 12 runs.

“For the first game seeing live pitching, I thought we made good contact,” Mann said. “We hit it sharp at times.”

Centreville’s biggest strike came in the top of the third inning when it collected six runs on four hits and three Trinity errors. The Lady Tigers also scored four runs in the sixth inning on three hits and three walks. Trinity head coach Chris Hutchins said those innings were his team’s downfall.

“We competed well for four of the six innings,” Hutchins said. “We had a couple of let downs that cost us. Hopefully with more game experience, we will get tighter on defense and put more pressure (on the other team).”

Centreville scored a single run in each of the first two innings. Tori Rouse reached on an error and scored on an RBI single by Taylor Delatte in the first, and Kaylea Hurst singled to lead off the second and came around to score on an error.

Centreville benefitted from three Trinity errors that set up three runs in its big third inning. Taylor Rogillio, Katelyn Bell and Rouse also singled in the inning. Delatte had the big hit in the third with a bases-loaded triple, and Centreville led 8-0 after three innings.

Bigner stayed solid throughout the contest. She struck out eight Trinity batters and walked just two.

Trinity’s lone hit came off the bat of Mallory Lancaster in the first inning.

The Trinity defense settled down in the fourth and fifth innings, and starting pitcher Kailey Hutchins held the deficit at eight runs until the top of the sixth.

Centreville then benefitted from three walks and three hits off of Trinity reliever Marty Lewis in the sixth to win by the 10-run rule.

Ariana Bigner, Braelon Bigner and Rouse each singled in the inning.

Rouse finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Delatte was 2-for-5, Hurst was 2-for-4, Bell was 2-for-4 and Sydnie Lyons finished 2-for-3 for Centreville.

Mann said his team features four seniors this season, but he was glad that some of his supporting players played well.

“Our younger players came through and stepped up,” he said.

Centreville (1-0) will face Copiah at 7:15 p.m. Thursday (junior varsity at 6 p.m.).

Hutchins said Trinity could learn a lot from the loss to Centreville.

“We can learn that the competition is only going to get better,” he said. “This is a young group that is going to compete, and they are going to play hard. I have no complaints with their work ethic or their attitudes.”

Trinity dropped to 1-2 on the season.
