MONROE, La. – The Trinity Lady Saints moved one step closer
to a state title Thursday with a convincing 74-39 win over River
Oaks in the Mississippi Private School Association Class A South
State Tournament at River Oaks School in Monroe.
Vanessa Gordon and Lauren Tanner each scored 21 points in the
Trinity win, and both contributed on the boards. Gordon ripped
down 14 rebounds – 13 on offense – and Tanner grabbed 13, eight
on the defensive end.
Ashley Kingsafer scored 12 points for the Lady Saints, and
Sara Greer added seven points, nine assists and 11 rebounds.
Trinity outscored River Oaks 16-4 in the first quarter, and
consistently built on that lead for the rest of the game.
The Lady Saints play Mount Olive at 2:30 p.m. today in the
tournament’s semi-final round. The other two teams left in the
tournament – Porter’s Chapel and Riverdale – face each other at
1 p.m.
The Saints lost an early lead and eventually the game in the
boys match, as the Tensas Chiefs won 62-58 with a fourth-quarter
surge.
Trinity outscored Tensas by 10 points in the first quarter
and took a 35-26 lead into the half. But the Chiefs rallied, outscoring
the Saints 17-10 in the final period to take the win.
David Crigler led the Chiefs with 17 points, while Daniel Mascagni
added 14 and Lee Hayle scored 11.
Gregory Ketchings led the Saints with 13 points, and Chad Ridley
and Chase Brown each chipped in with 11. Ridley added 14 rebounds
and Brown had seven assists.
Tensas will face Briarfield at 6 p.m. today, while River Oaks
plays Riverdale at 7:30 p.m. in the boys semi-finals.
