VICKSBURG — Kailey Hutchins pitched a two-hitter for Trinity Episcopal as the Lady Saints overcame the excruciating heat to defeat the Porter’s Chapel Academy Lady Eagles 5-0 Monday afternoon.

Hutchins struck out five batters in the five-inning game and kept Porter’s Chapel off the scoreboard despite walking four batters — thanks to the effort of the Trinity defense, which committed just two errors.

“I was pleased with the pitching and defense. Both were pretty solid today,” Trinity Episcopal head coach Chris Hutchins said.

The Lady Saints scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Marty Lewis led off with a single and Hutchins singled to put runners at first and second. After both runners moved into scoring position, Tali Beard and Mallory Lancaster each had RBI fielder’s choices.

Porter’s Chapel pitcher Lynrick Morgan did her best to keep the Lady Eagles in the game after that rough first inning. She kept Trinity off the scoreboard the next two innings, but Kailey Hutchins would not allow the opposition to get a rally going.

Then in the top of the fourth inning, the Lady Saints would put the game away. Carli Trisler started off the inning with a single. Hannah Fitt then walked and Bailey Porter brought in Trisler with a bunt single. Another run scored on a passed ball and Hutchins added an RBI single.

Morgan went the distance for the Lady Eagles. She allowed five earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

Despite the win, coach Hutchins was not pleased with the team’s approach at the plate.

“I feel we were a little passive at the plate today. We need to do a better job driving the ball into the gaps. We need to take more aggressive cuts,” Hutchins said.

Hutchins also said it wasn’t easy trying to concentrate on the game with temperature at approximatley 100 degrees at game time.

“That was a challenge to keep everyone cool and hydrated. It was 111 (degrees) with the heat index. But everyone understood that’s the way it is with our season,” Hutchins said. “It’s going to be hot for the next several weeks. We’ve got to adapt, and everyone’s got to adapt.”

Trinity Episcopal (1-1) hosts Centreville Academy today with the junior varsity game at 6 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m.
