CENTREVILLE — Even though Centreville did not get the three to five inches of rain that parts of Natchez and Adams County received from Saturday morning’s heavy thunderstorms, there was enough inclement weather to force the cancellation of the 2012 Centreville Academy Softball Tournament.

“We tried. We didn’t get the rain everyone else got. But we got enough rain where it was too wet and it’s still raining (at 10:45 a.m.),” Lady Tigers head coach Mark Mann said.

Mann added that at 6:30 a.m., Adams County Christian School head coach Forrest Foster called him to see what the weather was like in Centreville. At that time, the bad weather was moving into Natchez while the sun was coming up down there.

Within an hour of the tournament’s first game — ACCS against Centreville at 9 a.m. — was when the rough weather started to make its march toward the Wilkinson County and Amite County line.

“We were getting warmed up and it started lightning. We waited about 30 minutes. Then we got some light rain for 30 minutes,” Mann said. “Then at about 9:30 a.m., we got caught with the heavy stuff.”

And it was not long after that the decision was made to call off the tournament. Mann said that this is the first time the entire Centreville Tournament was called off because of bad weather.

“We did this for three or four years (back in the mid-2000s) and then we played somewhere else for a couple of years,” Mann said. “This is the fourth year we’ve had it back.”

In addition to Centreville and ACCS, Trinity Episcopal and Franklin Academy were also scheduled to participate in the tournament.

ACCS (1-0) will play host to Wilkinson County Christian Academy on Monday beginning at 5:15 p.m., starting with the junior varsity game and to be followed by the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.

Trinity Episcopal (0-1) travels to Vicksburg to take on Porter’s Chapel Academy with the JV game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game to follow at 6:15 p.m.

Centreville Academy will have to wait until Tuesday for its first game of the season when the Lady Tigers travel to Natchez to take on Trinity Episcopal with the JV game at 6 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:15 p.m.
