Rain cuts Vidalia tournament short

VIDALIA, La. – Only four of the scheduled nine games in Saturday’s Vidalia High School Softball Tournament at the Vidalia softball field were able to be played before rain ended up cancelling the tournament with no declared winner.
&uot;Next year we will have a declared winner,&uot; said Vidalia head coach Gary Paul Parnham.
In the first game of the tournament, Vidalia’s junior varsity club defeated Monterey 9-2.
Vidalia pitcher Miranda Doughty held the Lady Wolves to three hits while striking out seven and walking five in four innings to pick up the win.
LaToya Burden went 2-for-3 with a double, Jennifer Wyles was 2-for-2 with a double and Kelsey Leake went 2-for-3 for Vidalia.
Whitney Roark took the loss for Monterey, allowing seven hits and walking five while striking out two in three innings.
Vidalia’s JV girls team improved to 4-2-1 overall.
In the other three games that were played, the Jena Lady Giants ended Franklin County’s three-game winning streak by routing the Lady Bulldogs 11-0; Winnsboro defeated Monterey 8-5; and Jena defeated Rayville 4-3 in six innings.
Franklin County, 5-4, returns to district action when it hosts Richland starting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday with the varsity game to be followed by the JV game.
In Friday’s District 3-2A battle between Vidalia and Ferriday, the Lady Vikings got back to .500 in district with a 13-0 win over the Lady Trojans.
The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Vidalia improved to 14-3 overall, 2-2 in district while Ferriday remained winless at 0-4 overall and in district.
Vidalia pitcher Amanda Stricklin threw a one-hitter while striking out 10 Lady Trojan batters and walking two in five innings to improve her record to 11-3.
Jenny Watson went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for Vidalia, which had only six hits in the game but took advantage of six walks by Ferriday pitcher LaToya Ceasor and 10 Lady Trojan errors.
Joyelyn Williams had Ferriday’s only hit of the game.
Vidalia returns to district play when it plays at McCall in a make-up game at 4 p.m. Monday.
Ferriday plays at McCall at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
