Natchez police were talking late Monday with an armed robbery suspect who escaped the Natchez Jail earlier that day, Police Chief Willie Huff said.
Tyrone Davis, 29, of Vidalia, was arrested and charged with a March 28 armed robbery on Brenham Avenue. The victim in that incident told police he was in the area looking for his cousin when Davis pulled up beside him, allegedly pulled out a gun and demanded money, taking $40 from the victim.
Police arrested Davis Monday and took him to the police department.
He was interviewed by investigators, and in the process of being transported back to the jail, he escaped through a &uot;not completely closed door,&uot; Huff said.
Police could not apprehend him, and Davis was last seen on Old Washington Road, Huff said.
Davis called police later that day and said he wanted his lawyer to talk with them about his surrendering, Huff said.
Huff said his jail commander will investigate the incident to determine how Davis was able to escape and whether police did anything wrong during the incident.
