The Cathedral Green Wave had an impressive 13-run second inning in which 18 batters went to the plate in a 17-3 win over Richland Tuesday at Chester Willis Field in a Division 6-2A game.
The game went only three and a half innings due to the 12-run, 4-inning rule.
Bart Lane was the winning pitcher for Cathedral, allowing one run on two hits while striking out five and walking two in three innings.
&uot;Bart hadn’t pitched in a while, so it was good to see him pitch well,&uot; said Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley Sr.
In addition to pounding out 11 hits off three Richland pitchers, Cathedral also took advantage of seven Ranger errors.
&uot;I’m glad to see us swing the bats some,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;They helped us with some errors.&uot;
Cathedral scored four times off Richland starting pitcher Leandrew Hicks in the bottom of the first inning. Ben Eidt scored on an error, Chris Norris scored on a Key Smith single and Brent Tosspon’s single brought in Clay Hammons and Charlie Norris. Although Cathedral (7-4, 4-1) had only three hits in the inning, Richland helped matters by committing four errors. Richland (1-10, 0-6) got on the board in the top of the second when Jerry Richardson singled, stole second and third and scored on a Reed Hawthorne fielder’s choice. Then Cathedral took control in the bottom of the second with its 13 runs. Eidt had an 2-run triple in his second at-bat of the inning. Chris Norris had an RBI single in his second at-bat, as did Hammons. Charlie Norris had a pair of 2-run singles and Jim Sandel had a two-run double. The three other runs came courtesy of Ranger errors.
&uot;It’s been a long time since we’ve had a big inning like that,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;They had a hard time getting that second out.&uot;
