Mistakes in baseball can cost you more than a game. Just ask Cathedral. The Green Wave committed five errors and stranded nine runners on Thursday in a 14-5 loss to Loyd Star at Chester Willis Field, and the loss knocked the Green Wave out of contention for a spot in the playoffs.

&uot;The kids gave me everything they had,&uot; Cathedral head coach Ken Beesley said following the loss. &uot;We are all a little disappointed right now, because we didn’t play to the best of our ability.&uot;

The problems started early for the Green Wave as the Hornets took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to two Cathedral errors.

A RBI single by Brent Tosspon led the way to three runs for Cathedral in the bottom half of the first, but the lead would not stand.

Loyd Star scored a single run in the second before adding five more in the third to take a 7-4 lead it would not relinquish.

The Green Wave had only one error in the big third inning for the Hornets, but three base on balls and three hits helped Loyd Star. Cathedral cut the Hornets’ advantage to 7-5 in the bottom of the fourth when Scott McLemore was driven home by Jim Sandel, but that would be all the offense the Green Wave would muster the rest of the way.

&uot;I really feel bad for our seniors,&uot; Beesley said. &uot;We have had three big games in the past two years that could have gotten us in the playoffs. We just haven’t been able to get it done.&uot;

The Green Wave has one game left on the schedule, a road contest at 5 p.m. on Monday at Vidalia.
