SICILY ISLAND, La. – Sicily Island Police Chief Eddie Newman, who suffered a massive heart attack in mid-April, is in stable condition and has been transferred to St. Francis Cabrini Medical Center in Alexandria.
Until he was transferred Monday, Newman had been treated at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans.
Newman’s heart is now twice as strong as it was after the attack, lung infections have cleared and he can breathe without the aid of machines. Newman’s wife, Cathy Newman, said Wednesday that he has even walked a bit.
&uot;God has performed a miracle in Eddie’s life,&uot;&160;Cathy Newman said. &uot;His healing hand has guided the doctors and nurses in the right direction.&uot;
It is not known how long Eddie Newman will have to undergo rehabilitation at Cabrini. He is still waiting for a heart transplant but must get stronger before the operation can even be attempted, Cathy Newman said.
She also said the whole Newman family thanks those who have supported them with prayers, visits, telephone calls, cards and financial support.
Recent fund-raising roadblocks raised more than $4,100 to help pay the medical expenses of Eddie Newman, who has no health insurance.
&uot;We first want to thank God, and then everyone else for their … support,&uot;&160;Cathy Newman said. &uot;Continue to pray for God’s perfect will for Eddie.&uot;
