A vacant house on Viener Street caught fire Monday night making it the second such house to burn in that area in just over two weeks.
Natchez Deputy Fire Chief Paul Johnson said firefighters were called to the scene at about 8 p.m. Monday.
&uot; When we got there we had fire coming out the windows,&uot; he said.
The firefighters put out the fire in about five minutes.
Its cause is still under investigation, but the fire is believed to have started near a couch inside the wooden residence at 1004 Viener St., Johnson said.
&uot;We think somebody went in there and set it on fire,&uot; he said.
The fire did not break through the building’s roof but caused a great deal of damage to contents inside the house, Johnson said.
The owners of the house are believed to live out of town, and their names were not available Tuesday, he said.
On May 19, firefighters fought a similar fire at a vacant house at 1002 Viener St.
Local residents said they believed people involved with drugs seen around that house might have been responsible.
