The clouds and thunder appeared as though they were going to wreak havoc on Vidalia’s Chamber of Commerce annual golf tournament. Again. Rain had cancelled the initial date for the event on June 7 at Duncan Park Golf Course.

But on this day, the golfing gods were on the side Miss-Lou linksters who had signed up for the four-person scramble. The ominous clouds, the barrage of thunder and a few raindrops skipped over Duncan Park, allowing 68 golfers to tackle the fairways and greens.

‘I’m glad we had good weather and that the clouds and thunder moved out and that we got in all 18 holes,&uot; said Linda Gardner, Vidalia’s Chamber of Commerce Director. &uot;We appreciate our sponsors and golfers.&uot;

And the beautiful day helped to produce some impressive scores. Seven foursomes carded scores of 60 or lower at the par-71 course. The rest of the groups fared well also, all posting below-par rounds.

In the A flight, Lee Huckaby, Tommy Milligan, Brent Smith and Keith Dallilio shot a round of 54 to take first place. Ronnie Dawson, Bill Holland, Linda Martin and Dan Scruggs finished one stroke off the pace. Billy Beckham, Moe LeBlanc, Barry Loy and Bill McKenzie nabbed third place with a round of 58.

In the B flight, Joey LaSyonne, Ross Partridge, Bobby Russ and Casey Young fired a 62 to grab first place. Bubba Boyd, Sally Durkin, Ronny Gardner and Danny Grayson turned in a 63, and Trey Rouse and Buddy Rouse and Carl and Chuck Fuqua scored a 65 to finish in second and third place, respectively.

Cathy Hinson and Pat Hinson collected the closest to the pin honors for the females and males. Cathy Hinson won he contest on the 9th hole, Pat Hinson dud so on the 15th. Sally Durkin and Howard French captured the longest drive contest at the 17th hole.
