The State government won’t pay most state employees Friday because of what the administration calls a computer glitch.

State employees in Concordia Parish said they found out about the problem via e-mail Thursday.

&uot;When you work for state government, all things are possible,&uot; said Marilyn Turner White, who works at the Department of Labor office in Ferriday. &uot;Besides, there’s nothing that can be done about it.&uot;

&uot;I’m just disappointed that the new (payroll) system isn’t more reliable,&uot; said co-worker Sally Frazier. &uot;But it’s no big deal – my bank’s working with me until my check can be deposited.&uot;

&uot;There’s not a whole lot I&160;can say about it, except that it isn’t fair,&uot; said Melinda Chauvin, who works with the Department of Motor Vehicles office near Vidalia.

Employees will receive their pay checks on Monday, the first working day of the new fiscal year.

Gov. Mike Foster mentioned the problem briefly on his &uot;Live Mike&uot; radio program, saying that some employees would not be getting their checks on time because of a computer problem.

The delay appears to impact most of the roughly 70,000 state employees.

Whit Kling, an assistant commissioner of administration, sent a memo to all department heads Thursday, advising them of the problem.

The memo said the delay would impact employees having direct deposit accounts and employees who receive ”an actual check.”
