Day care students at Adams County Christian School learned valuable water safety skills Wednesday – skills that could save lives.

School lifeguards Brandi Case and Kristin Cox taught the students the safety tips through a program for children sponsored by the American Red Cross.

&uot;I think it’s really important that they understand this,&uot; Case said. &uot;(It’s) just to teach them about water safety (and) how to be safe around the pool.&uot;

The children learned such things as the importance of obeying lifeguards, following the rules and swimming in a supervised area with other people present.

The American Red Cross certified Case, a second-year lifeguard, to teach the course. Case, a senior at ACCS, said she likes her job because she gets to be outside.

&uot;(And) I like being around kids,&uot; she said.

Cox, a junior at ACCS, agreed saying that she liked her job for many of the same reasons.

She also enjoys teaching swimming lessons. The small group settings allow her to have more one-on-one interaction with her students.

&uot;You get to spend so much time with them,&uot; Cox said.

And hopefully the lessons they learned during Wednesday class will spill over into their recreational pool times, the lifeguards said.
