The team of Gary Farmer, David Cothren, Randy Johnson and Cookie Wilson shot a 16-under-par 55 to win the Local Oldsmobile Scramble Golf Tournament by one shot over two teams Saturday at the Duncan Park Golf Course.

Farmer, Cothren, Johnson and Wilson, all from Natchez, will next play in the Oldsmobile Scramble Sectional Qualifier on Aug. 20 at Beau Pr\u00E9 Country Club.

&uot;We were wanting to win to play in the sectional at Beau Pr\u00E9,&uot; Cothren said.

The winning team had one eagle, 14 birdies and three pars. About the team’s round, Wilson said, &uot;It was great on the front nine and okay on the back. We shot 10-under on the front. Gary drove it to three feet from the hole on seven for eagle and made the putt.

&uot;We birdied three of the par-3s. Other than that, we scrambled well.&uot;

&uot;We just hit it real close on the front,&uot; said Cothren. &uot;We only had two birdie putts from outside eight feet, and the rest were pretty close.&uot;

The two teams that finished one shot back with 15-under-par 56s were Jay Lessley, Tommy Geoghegan, Baxter Lee and Billy Ulmer, all from Natchez; and Ronnie Edmonds, Steve Jester, and Brett Guidry, all from Baton Rouge, La., and Thad Foreman of Kaplan, La.

Lessley, Geoghegan, Lee and Ulmer had one eagle, 13 birdies and four pars.

&uot;We had a chip-in from just off the green on the left side on five, which I made,&uot; said Lee. &uot;On 12, we had a drive on the green. We had an eight- to 10-foot eagle putt and we all missed it. That was the difference.&uot;

Edmonds, Jester, Foreman and Guidry also had one eagle, 13 birdies and four pars.

&uot;The good thing was we had contributions from everyone,&uot; Edmonds said. &uot;The big man (Guidry) hit within four feet for eagle on seven. It then came down to the last man to make the putt. We hit a lot of long shots, so we didn’t have too many long putts.&uot;

Thirty-two players participated in the four-person scramble. Cothren said he would like to see more people to play in this tournament.

&uot;I don’t know why more people play in this,&uot; he said.

&uot;It costs $50 to play and you get a $50 gift certificate from Oldsmobile plus a dozen golf balls.

&uot;More people need to get their USGA handicap, which costs $10 a year. If you play good enough to win the sectional, you’ll get to play in the nationals at Disney World in Orlando.&uot;
