All aboard! Natchez train loading up

Another train has pulled into the Natchez station but this locomotive may be big enough to keep us all on track.

Genesis Energy will be shipping its crude oil products into and out of Natchez, via the Adams County Port and the railroad owned by Natchez Railway. The company plans to move 20,000 rail cars annually, a number reportedly high enough to convince the owners of the area’s only railroad line to keep the rail in business.

That’s a big deal.

Genesis did not announce plans to hire hundreds of workers or invest billions of dollars, but a commitment to use the rail line frequently is worth more to this community than either one of those things.

Having the rail could very well be the key to hundreds of jobs and billions of dollars in the years to come.

We welcome Genesis to the Adams County family, and trust they’ll be good community partners.

At the same time, more praise for Natchez Inc., the Adams County Board of Supervisors and the Mississippi Development Authority is warranted.

As needs have been identified, goals set and plans made, Natchez Inc. and its community partners — including the City of Natchez, Adams County and Natchez Now — have continually found answers to Adams County’s industrial problems.

With frequent announcements and continued hard work, the economic development arm of our community is certainly earning its keep.
