The Natchez Democrat
Drew Havard, Johnathan Newman and John Vincent combined for
399 rushing yards and three touchdowns as the Centreville Tigers
defeated the Amite School Center Rebels 33-17 Saturday in Liberty.
Havard had 13 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns, Newman
had 17 carries for 156 yards and a touchdown and Vincent had 10
carries for 86 yards and caught two passes for 53 yards and a
touchdown. The outcome, however, wasn’t as convincing as it looked
as the Rebels trailed by only four points twice in the game before
Centerville pulled away for the win.
Centreville jumped out to a 14-0 lead on a 28-yard by Havard
with 8:20 to go in the first quarter and a 25-yard run by Newman
with 9:14 left in the second quarter. Royce Fonte made both extra
points.
ASC cut into Centreville’s lead in the second quarter on a
13-yard run by quarterback Brent Bean with 6:00 left and a 35-yard
field goal by Andre Aguilair with one second left. Centreville
quarterback Jennings Field, who completed four of eight passes
for 89 yards and one interception, connected with Vincent on a
52-yard scoring strike and Fonte’s point-after gave the Tigers
a 21-10 lead.
The Rebels answered just 49 seconds later on a 76-yard pass
from Bean to Will Dillon. Aguilair added the extra point as once
again ASC was down by only four points at 21-17. Bean was five-for-nine
for 96 yards. That would be as close as the Rebels would get,
however, as Havard scored on a 22-yard run with 51 seconds left
in the third quarter and Vincent scored on a 4-yard run with 6:08
remaining in the game.
Centreville, 2-1, hosts ACCS to begin District 4-3A play at
7 p.m. Friday and ASC, 1-2, plays at Huntington to begin District
5-1A play at 7 p.m. Friday.
