COLUMBIA, Miss. –
A 37-yard pinpoint pass from Jamal Pittman
to Tim Mingo with 16 seconds remaining put Columbia up 15-14 over
Wilkinson County at the half, a lead
it would not relinquish.
The homestanding Wildcats knocked off the previously unbeaten
Wildcat visitors 36-14 to advance to the 3A semifinals against
Collins.
Wilkinson County responded when Carl Cage punched the ball into
the end zone from 12 yards out. Dent hit a wide-open Jones for
the tying two-point conversion.
WCHS opened its next drive with a 40-yard punt return by James
Jones, putting the ball at the Columbia 17.
A 16-yard gain by Cage moved it to the 1, and, two plays later,
he crossed the goal line, giving his team a 14-8 lead, but it
was not to be.
The win pushes Columbia’s record to 11-2, while Wilkinson County
finishes the year 11-1.
