Calvin Thomas had 14 points and eight rebounds and Lakendrick Nix had 11 points, six rebounds, and three steals before being injured late in the game.

With 1:26 to go in the game, Nix was going in for a lay-up when he was fouled hard by Winnsboro’s Derrick Rose. Nix fell hard to the floor, injuring his left shoulder.

Behind the shooting of Kenneth Miller in the first half, Winnsboro (1-2) stayed in the game and trailed by only one point, 23-22, at halftime. He finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

&uot;We were at a disadvantage with the height,&uot; Davis said. However, Ferriday (4-1) outrebounded Winnsboro 36-34.

Ferriday took a 35-29 lead going into the fourth quarter and then outscored Winnsboro 20-16 in the final frame.

The Vikings jumped out to a 14-point lead in the third quarter, only to nearly let victory slip away.

Vidalia (4-0) appeared to be headed to an easy win when they led 42-28 midway in the third quarter.

Newellton (4-3) made a furious comeback in the remainder of the second half.

The Bears outscored the Vikings 31-17 and tied the score at 59 on a basket by Ian Jordan with about 15 seconds left.

Vidalia’s Tony Hawkins, who finished with 20 points, made the game-winning free throw with 4.8 seconds left.

Josh Bush came off the bench and had 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots.

Vidalia will play Ferriday in the boys championship game at 7:30 p.m. today.

Ferriday girls 45, Winnsboro 40

Monique Jones scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Ferriday Lady Trojans advanced to the finals of the Vidalia High Ronnie Brown Memorial Tournament with 45-40 win over the Winnsboro Lady Wildcats.

Torisheka Taylor added 12 points and seven boards for Ferriday.

&uot;I think we did a good job of controlling them,&uot; said Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron.

Ferriday (4-0) got off to a slow start, missing several shots from near the basket as Winnsboro (3-2) took an 18-11 lead after the first quarter.

&uot;We also did a good job of finishing the game when we had the slim lead,&uot; Abron said.

The Lady Bears’ duo of Amanda Gales and Kimberly Brown proved to be too much for the Lady Vikings in the other girls semifinal contest of the tournament.

Gales finished with 24 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Brown had 15 points and 25 rebounds.

&uot;We just came out a little flat to start,&uot; said Lady Vikings head coach Damus Smith.

Newellton (5-2) put the game out of reach in the second quarter, outscoring Vidalia (4-1) 20-12 to take a 32-18 halftime lead.

Vidalia tried to mount a comeback in the second half, but got no closer than five points the rest of the way. Ramona Washington lead Vidalia with 11 points and 16 rebounds and Dominique Trimble added nine points.

Ferriday will face Newellton in the girls championship game at 6 p.m. today.
