VIDALIA, La. – Coach Robert Sanders Vidalia Vikings seemingly can’t be stopped these days.

They followed up Saturday night’s thrilling win over arch-rival Ferriday in the finals of the Ferriday Invitational Tournament with a home rout of the Winnsboro Wildcats, winning 76-51.

But to judge from the first few minuted of play, one would have thought the Vikings (12-1) were going to be denied, as Winnsboro got off to a good start, racing out to a quick 7-0 lead.

It didn’t matter, however, as the Vikings went on to outscore the visitors in every quarter to take the 25-point yawner. In large part to a staunch full-court pressure defense.

Sanders credited improved guard play as one of the reasons for the victory.

“Our guards got some key steals when we needed them to, which led to some easy baskets for us,” Sanders said.

Another trend that Viking fans aren’t seeing as much, of their team playing in spurts.

“We beginning to put together more complete games,” Sanders said late Tuesday night. “In the past, we are slow out of the gate or we grab a big lead and let out opponents get back into it, before we get the win, but I think we are starting to put some things together on both ends of the floor.”

Winnsboro will get another crack at the Vikings, however, as the two teams meet again in the first round of the Newellton Tournament which begins tonight. “They’ll probably make some adjustments and come out stronger tonight,” Sanders added.

In the first game on the docket, the Lady Vikings came up on the short end of a 57-30 stick to the Lady Wildcats. The loss dropped Vidalia’s girls to a 4-7 mark.
