VIDALIA — A Vidalia Police Department officer was terminated Wednesday after receiving his second disturbance complaint in six months.

Roger “Chip” McDonald Jr., 23, was terminated because of behavior that was unbecoming of an officer, during an off-duty incident at which alcohol was involved, Police Chief Arthur Lewis said.

“We investigated the complaint, talked to the officer, the city attorney and reviewed our policies and procedures before deciding to terminate the officer,” Lewis said. “He was an asset to this department, but we have to continue doing our job in a professional manner for the public.”

Officers responded to the disturbance call at approximately 3:30 a.m. Saturday near Vidalia Lower Elementary School, not knowing McDonald was present and off-duty.

While no arrests were made, a report was filed at the department.

In December, the Concordia Parish District Attorney’s Office investigated an incident involving McDonald, who allegedly beat a 19-year-old at a birthday party.

Another off-duty officer was hosting the party, where McDonald was a guest, while he was off-duty.

Both officers were disciplined by the Vidalia Police Department, but continued to work.

McDonald had been employed with the department for approximately one year.
