FERRIDAY — Fans of the Huntington varsity boys were able to get in and get out of the gym fairly quickly for the Hounds’ game against Chamberlain-Hunt Academy.
The game took a little over an hour to complete, and after a few minutes into the first quarter, the outcome was never in doubt.
Huntington played tough on defense and was able to capitalize on numerous Wildcat turnovers en route to a 61-26 stomping.
Huntington assistant football coach Matt Mason substituted for basketball coach Edwin White, who was on leave Thursday due to a death in the family.
“The boys just stepped in, ran their offense and played hard,” Mason said. “That’s all I asked them to do tonight. We just played aggressive and forced them into turnovers and easy baskets early. I thought we did a good job with shot selection this evening.”
Huntington led 16-7 after the first quarter, and extended its lead even more in the second. The Hounds went on a 9-0 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter, before the Wildcats finally hit a 2-pointer at the 5:17 mark.
The Hounds, however, outscored the Wildcats 17-5 in the final five minutes before intermission, putting them up 42-14 at the half.
The second half was more of the same, and the officials began to let the clock run uninterrupted when Huntington captured a 50-15 lead with 3:42 left in the third.
The Hounds were led by strong performances by upperclassmen Jess Dossett and Kevin Brown. Dossett scored 21 points and Brown added 19.
“Jess and Kevin are both athletic kids,” Mason said. “For this team to be successful, they have to make plays. They both stepped up and made some shots for us tonight.”
For Mason, a win as an interim coach keeps his basketball record untainted, he joked.
“I’m now 8-0 when coaching basketball,” Mason said. “I’m 7-0 coaching 7th grade boys, and now I’m 1-0 coaching varsity boys.”
