NATCHEZ &045; Warren Central’s varsity girls’ soccer team may have entered its Division 6-5A matchup with Natchez High with a losing record, but the way the Lady Vikings played one would have thought otherwise.

Warren Central scored six goals in the game’s first 20 minutes, with Liza Kate Chaney having a hand &045; or in this case a foot &045; in three of them, as the Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Bulldogs 13-0 Friday night at Tom

F. Williams Memorial Stadium.

&uot;The girls looked like they had too much time off,&uot; Natchez coach Dennis Hogue said. &uot;They had to refamiliarize themselves with the game. They were a little slow.&uot;

Despite the lopsided score, Natchez goalies Sara Weaver and Amber Smoot combined for 34 saves in the game.

&uot;Sara was actually the MVP. She plays hard every game,&uot; Hogue said. &uot;The score could almost be doubled without Amber.&uot;

Weaver had to start at goalie and played the first 21 minutes of the first half before Smoot, the regular starting goalie for the Lady Bulldogs, went into the game.

Chaney scored two goals and had an assist on a goal by Megan Woleben, Alisha Lawrence scored twice and Magen Carlisle scored a goal to give Warren Central (5-6-1, 1-0) a 6-0 halftime lead.

Warren Central had 36 shots on goal in the first half and 66 for the game to just four shots on goal for Natchez (1-7, 0-2).

&uot;I don’t think I expected that many&uot; shots on goal, Lady Vikings head coach Holly Lane said. &uot;Tonight I think the two weeks break did us some good because we were wore out.&uot;

Warren Central boys 14, Natchez 1

Greg Carroll scored three goals and had two assists for the Vikings (6-3-1, 1-0), who scored seven goals in each half. However, Vikings head coach Jay Harrison was not happy with the final score.

&uot;I don’t like to run up the score,&uot; Harrison said. &uot;We usually score only six or seven goals a game. I’m not proud of the score. My starters needed the time in the game.&uot;

Natchez (0-8, 0-2) avoided the shutout when Jermaine Marsaw scored late in the game.

&uot;Nobody beats us 13-0,&uot; Bulldogs assistant coach Brent Bourland said. &uot;They played hard in the second half. They never gave up.&uot;

Natchez goalies Lamar O’Neal and Aaron Ratliff combined for 22 saves &045; eight by O’Neal and 14 by Ratliff.

&uot;They were fired up and ready to play,&uot; Hogue said. &uot;The first 10 to 15 minutes of the game our boys were intense. Then they scored the first goal and the guys started playing safe.&uot;
