Natchez High hurdler Kendrick Gibbons opted for the latter Saturday at the Magnolia State Indoor Track and Field Championships in Jackson.

Gibbons ran the 55-meter hurdles in 7.45 seconds, breaking the four-year-old previous record of 7.63 seconds set four years ago. Already one of the top high school indoor hurdlers in the nation, Gibbons posted another impressive time in his second meet of the indoor season.

&uot;Going into that race he said he wanted to set the state record,&uot; NHS head coach Larry Wesley said. &uot;He did a good job. He was way out in front. His confidence is high. When someone tells you you’re ranked third in the nation in high school, you want to thrive off that. He wants to prove he does deserve that position.&uot;

Gibbons, however, wasn’t finished there. He won the long jump with a leap of 22-1, was second in the high jump at 5-10 and was part of the 1,600-meter relay team that finished second at 3:31.57 as the Bulldogs finished second in the team standings with 95 points.

Port Gibson won the meet with 101 points.

Other results from the boys were Darryl Basset in ninth in the long jump at 19-2, Anthony Green in third in the long jump at 19-7, Karlecio Richardson in fourth in the 400 at 53.4 seconds, Donta Brown in eighth in the 1,600 in 5:12.38, Byron Augustine in 19th in the 1,600 at 5:43..28, Anthony Green in fourth in the triple jump at 42-03 and Bassett in third in the triple at 42-05.

In the 300-meter, Darius Edwards was first in 37.20 seconds, Travis Washington in fifth in 38.32 and Willie Wesley 11th in 40.44 seconds.

In the 800, Chris Tenner was sixth in 2:15.57 and Bassett ninth in 2:22.18. Brown was third in the 3,200 at 11:10.15, Augustine was 10th in 12:12.38 and Montrail Shelton was 13th in 12:54.39.

In the 300 hurdles, Edwards was 10th in 8.65 seconds and Richardson eighth in 8.42 seconds. In the 55-meter, Richard Blanton was second in 6.65 seconds and Travis Washington third in 6.78 seconds.

The 3,200-meter relay team of Brown, Travis Graves, Tenner and Augustine finished sixth in 9:42.43.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Bulldogs won the meet handily with 101 points without the services of star sprinter Janice Davis, who was in California.

The Lady Bulldogs got a couple of firsts from Lexi Washington and Teneika Hill to win the meet by 39 points. Pearl finished second with 62 points.

Washington won the long jump at 16-6 and finished second in the high jump at 4-10. She also ran a leg on the 1,600-meter relay team with Hill, Serena Dixon and Taji Dorsey that finished first in 4:19.81.

In the long jump Dorsey was third at 16-3 and Dixon fourth at 14-11. Porshe Singleton was fourth in the shot put at 32-4 and fifth in the 800 at 3:02.45.

Hill won the 400-meter in 1:01.43 and the 55-meter hurdles in 8.63 seconds. She finished third in the 55-meter in 7.54 seconds
