NATCHEZ &045; The opponent wasn’t the caliber of a Central Private, but Trinity Episcopal’s boys did not treat it lightly.
The Saints posted their 48th straight win at home Monday with a 74-27 blistering of Porter’s Chapel. Fresh off an impressive win over the Class AAA Rebels, the Saints (22-5) now set their sights on the remainder of the schedule, including today’s bout at Tensas.
The Saints put the game away early thanks to a half-court defense that gave the Eagles fits.
&uot;Our pressure defense caused so many turnovers,&uot; Trinity head coach David King said. &uot;I thought we rebounded defensively well and really got our transition game going really well. We were able to get out there and run with them. We moved the ball well, got good pressure from our transition defense and were able to put the game away early.&uot;
The Saints did just that with a 22-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Using an inside game with Dudley Guice Jr. battling Porter’s Chapel big man Joseph Ivey, the Saints hammered out a 20-9 run in the second quarter to lead 42-16 at half.
Trinity followed it with a 22-8 advantage in the third to lead 64-24 heading into the fourth quarter.
Guice led all scorers with 24 points, while Chase Brown had 15. Ivey led Porter’s Chapel with nine points.
&uot;He (Guice) got assists from everybody on the team,&uot; King said. &uot;They were really feeding the ball well into him down there. Ivey is a small college prospect, and I thought we did a good job of holding him.&uot;
