LAFAYETTE, La. &045; After dodging rain showers for the past two weeks, the Vidalia Lady Vikings got in a good week’s worth of games into one day.

And four out of four ain’t bad.

The Lady Vikings (5-0) pulled a sweep of their pool at the Lafayette High School tournament with wins over Acadiana Prep, Morgan City, Church Point and New Iberia Saturday.

Much of the credit went to solid pitching from their three starters, but the bats came through as well. The Lady Vikings posted shutouts in their last two games.

&uot;Our pitching was pretty good all day,&uot; Vidalia head coach Gary Paul Parnham said. &uot;We’ve had a lot of games rained out. Our pitchers are throwing well, but we’re really not there yet. We’re working behind in the count a lot, but that will get better with more play. But overall I was pleased with our pitching.&uot;

The Lady Vikings got solid outings on the mound in the last two games from Jenny Watson and Miranda Doughty. Watson tossed three no-hit innings as the Lady Vikings downed Acadiana Prep 11-0 in three innings in the last game, and Doughty allowed two hits in a five-inning 6-0 win over Morgan City in Game 3.

Vidalia started the tournament with an 8-5 win over New Iberia and a dramatic 5-4 win over Church Point in its second game. The Lady Vikings banged out 10 hits in the Morgan City game.

&uot;We started off kind of slow,&uot; Parnham said. &uot;In the New Iberia game we scored eight runs but only had three hits. We started slow and kind of gained momentum as the tournament went on. I was pleased with our effort. We’re still making silly mistakes, but we’ll correct that as the year goes on.&uot;

The most exciting game was the second game against Church Point as the Lady Vikings had to rally to take the win. The Lady Bears tacked on four runs in the top of the fourth after Vidalia took a 1-0 lead in the first to take control of the game.

The Lady Vikings got two in the bottom of the fourth to cut it to 4-3 before their last at-bat where the first two batters were retired.

Jaci DeWeese started the two-out rally with a single and scored on a Christy Corley double. Ashley Prince then launched a liner to second base, and Church Point’s second baseman misplayed the ball to allow Corley to score the game-winning, walk-off run.

&uot;That was the first time this season we’ve been put in that situation,&uot; Parnham said. &uot;The kids responded well. That’s something we can take with us the rest of the season. It was a good learning experience right there.&uot;
