VIDALIA, La. &045; There may be no use naming a No. 1 starter for the Vidalia Lady Vikings.

It’s not that anyone is scared of hurting someone else’s feelings. The Lady Vikings have three legitimate starters they can throw at any time, and Miranda Doughty took her turn on the mound Tuesday by tossing a two-hitter in the team’s 2-0 win over Buckeye.

The other two &045; Jenny Watson and Christy Corley &045; will just have to wait to top her.

&uot;Miranda has been doing great all year long, and I’ve come to expect that from her,&uot; Vidalia head coach Gary Paul Parnham said. &uot;Just about every outing out Miranda has been solid for us. I don’t really want to name a No. 1. We’ve got three pitchers I’ve got confidence in that we can put on the mound and we can win. If we can hit, I feel good about our chances.&uot;

The Lady Vikings’ bats did not give all the production they might have hoped, but no bother. Doughty allowed two singles &045; both to Buckeye No. 4 hitter Brittany Alwell &045; while striking out 12 while walking just two and staying ahead of the count most of the game.

&uot;The best thing working was the rise ball,&uot; said Doughty, who threw a one-hitter Saturday against Many. &uot;I always throw it. I throw it more than the fastball. I can throw different pitches and keep the batter off guard. I feel confident when I’m out there.&uot;

The Lady Panthers had just one baserunner get past first base, but Doughty put out the fire real quick. Alwell beat out a grounder for an infield single with two outs in the sixth, and Doughty worked the count full against Lauren Paul before walking her to put Alwell in scoring position.

Doughty then struck out Sam Grant on three pitches to end the inning.

&uot;We just couldn’t hit her,&uot; Buckeye head coach Darlene Wiley said. &uot;Not that we can’t hit her, but we couldn’t today. Actually her offspeed. Not really her changeup, but her offspeed more. Our timing was what hurt us today.

&uot;We’ve been hitting the ball well, but we’re up and down. The last couple of games we’ve hit the ball well. That’s the most disappointing thing. Out bats weren’t here today.&uot;

The Lady Vikings didn’t make that much thunder at the plate, but they did get some timely hits from No. 9-hole hitter Jaimee Jordan, a freshman in for the absent Heather Miller and playing her first varsity game.

In the third Jordan led off with a single but ended up on third when the ball got past Buckeye’s left fielder. She later scored on a grounder from Doughty for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth Ashley Prince reached on an error, went to second on Lauren Clayton’s bunt single and scored on a single from Jordan for a 2-0 lead.

&uot;My shortstop is in the hospital, and my little freshman went 2 for 3 today,&uot; Parnham said of Jordan. &uot;I couldn’t be more proud of her. She came through in her first varsity game. Considering that, I thought she did an excellent job.&uot;

The Lady Vikings finished with seven hits against Buckeye right-hander Amanda Paul but couldn’t get the key hit when runners were in scoring position.

Amanda Paul struck out just three but got Vidalia batters to ground out on just about every occasion where runners were on base.

&uot;I was proud of her,&uot; Wiley said. &uot;She pitched a good game. We just had some mental mistakes on our fielding. That wasn’t her fault. We’re a young team. I start freshmen and sophomores.&uot;

The Lady Vikings left eight runners on base, including six in scoring position. They left runners on second and third and second and third innings and runners on first and second in the fourth.

&uot;We’re not getting the timely hits we need,&uot; Parnham said.

&uot;We get runners in scoring position but can’t get the hits we need. We’ll continue to work on it. We don’t want to peak too early anyway.&uot;
